The Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life
Ignatius of Loyola wrote the Spiritual Exercises in the 1500’s and still today they are current and offer a way to grow stronger in faith and in relationship with God. The spiritual exercises were written to be given on a 30 day silent directed retreat. But, because most lay people cannot get away for this length of time, Ignatius added the 19th Annotation which allows the Exercises to be given in daily life over a 9 month period. The Spiritual Exercises (19th Annotation) use scripture in daily prayer to draw a person deeper into relationship with Jesus and to journey with Him through His life.
2018 was the first year Dovehouse has offered a Rule of Life. The idea of living a Rule may be new to you, as it was to many who committed to living it this year. The goal behind living a Rule of Life is simply to remind ourselves of who we want to be and how we want to live. Our Rule then helps us live this way by reminding us of the value of specific spiritual practices. Our practices are:
Present: Seek to be aware of God in each present moment
Prayer: Set aside time for personal prayer and the praying of one fixed hour prayer
Simplicity: Seek to live simply and rely on God's providence
Silence and Solitude: Spend time daily in silence and solitude
Spiritual Direction: Seek regular spiritual direction
Spiritual Reading: Read the Scriptures or other spiritual writings daily
Eucharist: Take Eucharist regularly
Generosity: Perform one act of mercy known only to you and God weekly
Entering into the Spiritual Exercises in Daily Life has a time commitment daily of :
1 hr a day in prayer (in meditation and in contemplation, entering the gospel scene)
15 minutes journaling
15 minutes Examen
1 1/2 hour weekly session to go over the past week's prayer with a spiritual director trained in offering the exercises.
The retreat in daily life begins with a dinner in August and ends with a dinner in May.
This next year (2019-20) there will be four extra spaces added for those who are in the Dovehouse Spiritual Direction Training Program to direct someone in the Spiritual Exercises in Daily Life.
It is possible that not everyone who applies will be accepted. There is limited space because of the time commitment for the directors.
General Information: Applicants should be engaged in regular prayer, and be comfortable using Scripture as part of their prayer. While not necessary, it is highly desirable that applicants have experience making some form of retreat (e.g. weekend) as well as some experience with ongoing spiritual direction. Applicants should be comfortable in talking about their experiences in prayer with a director. The retreat requires a commitment of approximately an hour a day in prayer, with 15 minutes of journaling and 15 minutes of the Examen, as well as a weekly meeting (about an hour) with a director beginning in September and ending in May.
Cost: The cost for the retreat is $150 a month for most Dovehouse spiritual directors and $160 a month if Gail Pitt is the director. There is a $50 non-refundable application fee. Once an individual has completed the application process, and if accepted for the retreat, a $100 non-refundable deposit is required. Both the application fee and deposit ($150) are applicable to the total cost of the retreat.
Application Process: An interview will then be scheduled. Applicants will be informed of the decision on their application as soon after the interview as possible, and a start date for the retreat will be confirmed.
Please mail your completed application and your $50 non-refundable application fee to:
